 Report of the Conference 
  
The Department of Physics, Maris Stella College, Vijayawada organized a  UGC Sponsored two day national Conference in collaboration with the DST Unit of Nanoscience and Thematic unit of Excellence, IIT M, Chennai on “Emerging Frontiers of Materials Science” on 12-13, February, 2015. Eminent persons were invited from various states of India. The conference witnessed 12 invited talks, received 55 abstracts for oral presentations, 26 papers for poster contest.

                                                 Inaugural session

The inaugural session started at 9.45 a.m on 12.02.2015 at the auditorium. Prof.T.Pradeep of IIT M, Prof.B.S.Murty of IIT M, Sri.D.Ramakrishna, the CEO of EFFTronics Pvt.Ltd., Prof.N.veeraiah of Acharya Nagarjuna University, Sri.G.S.V. Krishna Rao, Deputy General Manager, Andhra Bank, Vijayawada-1, Rev.Sr.Dr.Kulrekha Mudartha, the convenor and Principal, Rev.Sr.Sleeva Thumma, the Correspondent of Maris Stella, the faculty members of the department of Physics, invited speakers, 137 delegates & scholars, 56 PG and UG students from various neighbouring colleges and 150 B.SC Degree (Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science) students of Maris Stella College participated in the conference.  Thus, this national conference witnessed an excellent integration of youth and scientists.

                                                                 Invited Speakers
1. Prof. T. Pradeep, NanoScience Unit and Thematic unit of Excellence, Institute of Technology, Madras  gave inagural Key note address.

2. Prof. B.S. Murty, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras presented a talk on “Advanced materials for Automotive, Aerospace and Energy applications”.

3. Prof. T. Pradeep, NanoScience Unit and Thematic unit of Excellence, Institute of Technology, Madras presented another talk on “My life in science”.

4. Prof.N. Veeraiah, the Research director, Department of Physics, Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, A.P. India, talked about "The role of luminescent materials in the development of modern science and technology".

5.Dr. G. Sivaramaiah, Department of Physics, Government College for Men (A), Cuddapah,  spoke on “Electron Spin Resonance study of E1' in natural and γ-ray-irradiated amethyst”.

6. Dr. A.T.Seshadri, Retired Professor, Dept. of Physics, I.I.T  Madras, Chennai presented a talk on “A newly synthesized and study of magnetic cum ferroelectric material”.

7. K. Mohan Kant, Department of Applied Physics, Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur spoke on “Electrical transport and magnetic properties of magnetite based core-shell nanostructures”.
  
8. Prof.P. Yadagiri Reddy, Department of Physics, Osmania University, Hyderabad-500007, India, spoke about "Multiferroic Materials  and Magnetoelectric effect".

9. Prof. Kajari Mazumdar, Department of High Energy Physics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. Spoke on “LHC: The unbelievable pursuit of the unimaginable”.

10. Buchi N. Nalluri, Director, PG studies and Research, KVSR Siddhartha College of Pharmaceutical,Vijayawada spoke on “Polymeric films for delivery of drugs in mouth”.

11. Dr. Sridhar Nimmagadda, Associate Professor of Radiology, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Baltimore, MD, 21287, who was on vacation  attended our conference and spoke on, “Molecular Imaging: A Stained Glass to Peek at Biological Processes in vivo”.

12.  Dr.K. Venkateswara Rao, Centre for Nano Science and Technology, JNTU H, Hyderabad,Telangana, spoke on, “Synthesis of nano materials for sensor applications”. 


Students Poster Presentation Contest
In order to encourage students’ community to take part in the conference, the Department of Physics, Maris Stella College, organized an INTER-COLLEGIATE POSTER PRESENTATION CONTEST on the theme “Advanced Material and its Applications” as part of UGC Sponsored Two day National Conference. 52 UG and PG studentsstudents took part in the contest. The preparation for this poster contest helped the students to gain knowledge about various advanced materials and their applications and also got an opportunity to listen to eminent scientists from various leading organizations. Dr.K.Ramachandra Rao, Government Degree College, Rajahmundry(A), and Dr.G.Sivaramaiah, Government College for Men, Kadapa were the adjudicators of the Posters. The results of the contest are given below:
I Prize:   G.Amani & D. Sudheer Team, II M.Sc, Andhra Loyola College,

               Topic:Restoring advanced eye sight using nanotubes
 II Prize:   CH.V.N.Sushma, II B.Sc MPC, SDMS College, Vijayawada.
                   Topic: Semiconductors and their applications
III Prize:   M.Leela Sushma & M.Vanitha Team, III B.Sc , Maris Stella College
                  Topic: Graphene and their applications
 Consolation prize: Ch.Navya & S. Suvarna Team, III B.Sc, Maris Stella College

The winners were given a certificate and were presented with books of former President A.P.J.Abdul Kalam

                                                                   Valedictory function

The conference was concluded with the valedictory function. Dr.L.Rathaiah, Chancellor, Vignan University, Vadlamudi gave the valedictory address.

   National conference on science from tomorrow
   SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT
  The Department of Physics at Maris Stella College is organising a UGC-sponsored ‘National Conference on Emerging Frontiers of Materials Science’ from February 12th and 13th  in the college premises.
    The objective of the conference is to introduce the frontier areas of research in materials science by renowned experts, academicians, senior scientists through examples from their works.
    This will help in creating a platform for graduate students, young researchers to identify research needs and opportunities in this emerging field, a press release said.
